Board Committees
What's a committee and what do they do?
An HOA committee is a group of community residents who volunteer to help the Homeowners Association (HOA) board by handling specific, focused tasks. These committees are subordinate to the board, act in advisory roles, and are formed to increase community involvement and reduce the burden on board members. Examples of committees include the Architectural Committee, Finance Committee, and Social Committee, and they can be permanent (standing) or temporary (ad hoc).
Purpose of HOA Committees
-
Support the Board:
Committees help the HOA board by taking on specialized duties, allowing the board to focus on overall decision-making.
-
Increase Community Engagement:
They provide opportunities for residents to get involved and contribute their skills and interests to the community.
-
Address Specific Needs:
Committees provide expertise and focused attention on particular areas, such as maintaining common areas or planning events.
-
Share Responsibilities:
They help to distribute the workload of managing the community, preventing burnout among board members.
How They Operate
Positions on HOA committees are filled by volunteers from the community.
Committees operate within the framework of the community's governing documents, such as the bylaws and CC&Rs.
Committees research topics, offer recommendations, and perform projects but do not make final decisions, which remain with the board.
The HOA board typically creates and appoints members to these committees, ensuring their work aligns with community goals.
